Okay the Lion Head Pub has FREE WINGS.  Not only that but a FREE WING BUFFET.  Wing buffet is a phrase I never thought of, but now that I have, I am very excited about it.  This means two kinds of wings—BBQ and Buffalo.  I had a BBQ and it was good—but not what I am in the wing game for.  The buffet is well attended but not even very busy—there were seats and the buffet was frequently replenished.  And Sam Oktoberfest is $2.50!  It’s crazy cheap.  DePaul students, where are you!?

So this is a pretty sunny picture of the Lion Head, and admittedly we were won over.  There was just one issue—the wings are broken in 2 just like at other places, except these are broken at the bone, leaving weird bone shard ends and bits.  Not cool!  But workaroundable.

Sauce was variable, because you could pick whichever ones you wanted.  The sauce was very tasty.  Best wings we’ve had so far!

It’s not super close to an el line, so we were unimpressed by locale.  The service was off the wall—she kept coming over to help constantly.  The wings were 10 cents apiece and Bud Light was 8$ a pitcher, though we were misled to think the pitcher was free with certain orders? It was confusing.

When we walked in it was EMPTY.  It started to fill up but it was still pretty quiet.  The ambiance was mostly docked because the door to the men’s room was WIDE open.  And there was a trough in there.  We could see everything.  Woo!  Hello men of Gameskeepers!  Although someone COULD have closed the doors no one would.

The wings WERE adequately saucy unlike every place we’ve been to.  We tried the mild and the hot, and both were a little more tomato-y and a little less vinegary than I’d prefer, but decent.  Not too greasy.  I wouldn’t go out of my way for the wing night.

Also odd was the completely non-itemized check.

McGees

The inaugural wing night was at McGees!  The wings were RIDICULOUSLY cheap—10 cents apiece.  Our waitress was ridiculously bad.  There was signage everywhere for deals every day of the week.  And you know, it’s in Lincoln Park.  This said:

The wings blew neither of us away.  They were just eh.  They are definitely the best I have had in Chicago so far, which isn’t saying much.  They weren’t dry.  They could have had more meat on them.  They were not breaded. They had adequate sauce-age.  When I asked for more sauce I got more for free.  A good deal.  Definitely not a place I’d crave, but completely adequate.
